What is phr?

Rubber recipes are written in 'parts per hundred rubber'. A typical black technical-goods recipe: polymer 100, carbon black 40–80, oil 5–30, zinc oxide 3–5 (1–3 with active ZnO), stearic acid 1–2, sulphur 1.5–2.5, accelerator 0.8–2, antidegradant 2–4, wax 1–3, processing aid 1–3.

The cure system

Sulphur (or peroxide) forms the crosslinks; accelerators (CBS, MBTS, TMTD) set speed and crosslink type; activators (zinc oxide + stearic acid) make the accelerator work; retarders (CTP) provide processing safety.

The protection system

Antioxidants (TMQ, BHT, BKF, MMBI) stop oxidation and heat ageing, antiozonants (6PPD, 77PD, AFS) ozone and fatigue, waxes (Antilux) static ozone. This class decides service life and is among the lowest-cost, highest-impact items in the recipe.

The processing system

Processing aids (Aktiplast T, Aflux 42) manage viscosity, dispersion and mould flow; peptisers (Renacit 11) natural rubber mastication; plasticisers (Vulkanol FH, oils) hardness and low-temperature flexibility.
